Here is mine:
You hear what you want to hear. While responding to numerous positions, one of the most talented candidates I know, sent his information to two very different companies that shared a key component of their name. Let’s call them National Testing Service and National Software Company.
It was the job at National Testing Service that was most appealing to him. It was a vastly larger and a well known company, not a small software group. He missed the call when it came but was exhilarated when he listened to the message. He immediately returned the call and set up an interview.
He prepped hard and was ready. On interview day, the offices were not quite what he’d expected, but he thought maybe they were interviewing at a remote location. The lack of logos and literature was surprising. So was the first question: “Why do you want to work for National Software?” He was not quick enough on the ad lib and blurted, “What, this isn’t National Testing Service?”
The interviewer was not amused. Needless to say, he did not get the job.
Happily employed now, this candidate learned his lesson: Prep for EVERY aspect of the interview and NEVER ASSUME.
