Hi there, my name is Nancy Shield! If you’ve read my blog, or clicked around www.idealinterviewco.com, you might already know about me and my professional background. While I usually use this blog to offer practical job advice for job seekers, I’m diverging from that format this week to give you some insight into myself, my expertise, and my talents.
Most importantly, I’ve spent essentially my entire career in hiring. I was a founding partner in Maximum Management, one of New York’s premier HRe hiring firms, now a part of Frazer Jones. There, we theorized and constructed a unique best practice focusing on candidate and client relationships, which helped build our reputation as boutique specialists in HR recruiting. We customized our hiring approach to each unique search and candidate, considering individual sensitivities and requirements, and we did so at the highest level.
My experience there was heavy on interaction with both clients and candidates. It was networking and communicating extensively with hiring managers. It was parsing through the qualifications and backgrounds of executive-level candidates, and it was prepping hundreds of professionals, at all levels, for the search/recruiting process. I coached many of these candidates through mock interviews, incorporating difficult but realistic questions, and worked to help them defend their backgrounds and career decisions. I’ve found that it’s extremely difficult to identify the mistakes and shortcomings which might appear during an interview, let alone preempt the prodding questions which might arise. An experienced outsider will always do this more successfully, leaving candidates with more time to prepare, practice, and research a company (its news and how it’s positioned in the market).
Being so ingrained in this holistic hiring method gave me a fuller understanding of the job search: What candidates often lack, what strengths they should highlight, how to hide flaws and maximize experience, etc. I’ve become adept at helping candidates speak to their specific strengths or put a positive light on negative situations. Having worked with thousands of individuals, I’ve been primed to tailor constructive feedback. Having analyzed countless documents, I can work any resume in a succinct, clear, presentable form.
And for every client I’ve had, no matter the context, I’ve made and kept the same promise: I will be your advocate through the offer negotiation, through onboarding, and through your first three-months at a company, providing guidance while you settle into your new role.
It’s this commitment and accessibility, partnered with my hard skills and experience, that give me the tool to help others navigate today’s job market. As mentioned elsewhere on the blog, the job market is a constantly changing beast. To guide others through it, one must not only understand hiring, but understand how hiring is changing moment-by-moment. There are certain understandings about the job market that only come from decades of experience, and I have made a career out of understanding them.
